NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen held constructive talks with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on Tuesday (28 January 2014). They discussed the full range of topics related to the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) cooperation agenda, and broader international issues of common concern.
The Secretary General underlined that NRC practical cooperation continues to expand in areas including counter-narcotics, counter-piracy and counter-terrorism. He underlined the importance of continuing high-level political dialogue this year, including on topics where there is as yet no agreement, such as missile defence and arms control.
The Secretary General updated Minister Lavrov on the situation in Afghanistan and the Alliance’s plans for a new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan forces from 2015 onwards.
The Secretary General and Minister Lavrov agreed to explore the possibility of supporting the United Nations / Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons mission on the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons in the framework of the NRC.
