The year ahead promises to be a busy one for NATO as the Alliance gears up for two key events: a summit in the United Kingdom in September and the end of the NATO-led combat mission in Afghanistan at the end of 2014.

The summit will look to the future, in order to ensure that Allies invest in the right capabilities and in strong partnerships “so that we remain robust and ready to respond to future challenges,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said during December’s meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

The summit will also pay tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of NATO and partner forces during a decade of unprecedented operations in Afghanistan, and will look ahead to the Alliance’s planned new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces after 2014.

The summit will take place in Wales on 4-5 September 2014. A number of preparatory meetings of Allied Defence and Foreign Ministers are expected to be held in the run-up to the September summit. The last NATO summit was held in Chicago in 2012.
