NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen thanked Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg for her country’s contributions to Allied operations and military capability projects during her visit to Allied headquarters on Monday (2 December 2013). “In many ways Norway is pointing the way for Future NATO, which will be a key theme for our Summit in the United Kingdom next year. An Alliance which is equipped to deal with the full range of modern threats, deeply engaged with partners who share our interests, and committed to the collective security of our transatlantic community,” the Secretary General said.

During their meeting Mr. Fogh Rasmussen and the Norwegian Prime Minister discussed items at the top of NATO’s security agenda, including Afghanistan and plans for a post-2014 NATO-led mission to train, advise and assist Afghan security forces. The Secretary General commended Norway for its work in training Afghan soldiers. Norway also contributes funds and equipment to support the Afghan security forces.

It was the Norwegian Prime Minister’s first visit to NATO since taking office in October. Norway also currently provides the flagship for NATO’s counter-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa, contributes personnel to NATO’s KFOR mission, and participates in many of the Alliance’s Smart Defence projects.
