NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed cooperation and the global security agenda, including Afghanistan and the Western Balkans, with his counterpart from the Vienna-based Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) Ambassador Lamberto Zannier on Monday (25 November 2013).

The Secretary General thanked Ambassador Zannier for his organisation’s ongoing contributions in Afghanistan. The OSCE in October announced it would send an election support team next year to Afghanistan for the presidential and Provincial Council elections following a request from the Government of Afghanistan. The OSCE also sent election support teams in 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen also expressed his appreciation for the OSCE’s efforts to facilitate this month’s municipal elections in Kosovo and the upcoming run-off in December. He noted the excellent cooperation between the OSCE, the European Union’s rule of law mission, and KFOR. The Secretary General said that KFOR will continue to contribute to the maintenance of a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement throughout Kosovo.

For the past 15 years NATO and the OSCE have cooperated at both the political and operational level in areas such as conflict prevention, crisis management and addressing new security threats. Consultations on regional security issues are held between NATO staff and their OSCE counterparts on a regular basis.
