Mrs Rasmussen, accompanied by Alun Morris (Director, NATO Staff Centre), visited Kensington Palace on 18 June at the invitation of Lady Caroline Richards, wife of General Sir David Richards, the UK Chief of Defence Staff.

Lady Richards thanked Mrs Rasmussen for the more than €80,000 raised through the charity balls which she and Mr Morris have organised over the past 4 years.  The money has been donated to the Afghan Appeal Fund and sent directly to women and children in Afghanistan for the development of  children’s education, including the construction of schools.

The lunch meeting also included Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti who was instrumental in setting up the first school in March 2001.  Dr Kharoti is working on the ground to ensure the funding provided by the charity goes directly to the children in the schools. He is also working with local chiefs and military forces to ensure a consistent approach to education.

Melanie Bradley MBE (Chief Operating Officer, Afghan Appeal Fund), who works closely with Lady Richards and Dr Kahroti, also attended the lunch.
