Representatives of Montenegrin civil society visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels and Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium, on 14 and 15 May. The visit provided an opportunity to discuss NATO’s current agenda and its relations with Montenegro, which is a candidate for NATO membership.
NATO Foreign Ministers invited Montenegro to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP) in December 2009, in response to the government’s Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations. The country is currently participating in the fourth annual national programme under the MAP, which provides advice, assistance and practical support to countries preparing for NATO membership.
In meetings with NATO civilian and military representatives, the visitors shared their varied perspectives on Montenegro’s relations with NATO and their country’s aspiration to join the Alliance. One of the difficulties Montenegro is facing on its Euro-Atlantic integration path is the low public support within the country for NATO membership.
The group also met with representatives of the Mission of Montenegro to NATO and with representatives of Slovenia, which acts as the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Montenegro and assisted in the preparation of the visit.
By engaging with political leaders, parliamentarians, civil society, media and students, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division is seeking to raise public awareness about NATO and the rights and responsibilities of membership.
