On 21 and 22 March 2013, the NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised a visit to NATO Headquarters for a group of Bahraini diplomats, who were visiting Brussels as part of NATO’s public diplomacy activities under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI).

Topics discussed included NATO’s new Strategic Concept and NATO’s outreach to the Middle East and the Gulf region; NATO’s military cooperation in the framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI); NATO-Russia relations, NATO’s operations in Afghanistan and Ocean Shield; NATO’s Civil Emergency Planning and new emerging security challenges.

The group met with Mr. Nicola de Santis, Head, Middle East and North Africa Countries Section in NATO’s Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, with Dr. Petr Lunak, Deputy Head, Partnership Section, Public Diplomacy Division, with Mr. Michael Rühle, Head, Energy Security Section, Emerging Secruity Challenges Division,  with Colonel Giuseppe di Maio, Section Chief, Cooperation and Regional Security Division in NATO’s International Military Staff, with Commander Bonu and Captain Ammerlaan from the Operations Division in NATO’s International Military Staff, and with Mr Guenther Bretschneider, Head of the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC).
