Brussels – Today, members of the NATO Defense College (NDC) Generals, Flag Officers and Ambassadors’ Course graduated at NATO HQ and were warmly congratulated by Lt. Gen. Jürgen Bornemann, Director General of the International Military Staff.

High-level representatives from member nations, partner countries and, for the first time ever, China successfully concluded a course on “NATO – Defence and Security in an Age of Austerity.” Aimed at enhancing mutual understanding of security concerns, the course provided a beneficial opportunity for networking and sharing views on critical security challenges in times of economic restrictions.

Addressing the students on NATO’s current operation and future challenges, Gen. Knud Bartels, Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, emphasized the complexity of the Alliance’s security environment today. Citing the Libya crisis as an example of the unforeseeable nature of conflicts, he reiterated the importance of building a full spectrum of capabilities in the framework of the ‘Smart Defence’ initiative, in order to deal with evolving and emergent threats.

The NDC comes under the direction of the Military Committee whose Chairman chairs the College’s Academic Advisory Board.
