The NATO Secretary General called President Mikheil Saakashvili and Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili on 12 October and congratulated both leaders, together with the Georgian people, for completing free, competitive and peaceful parliamentary elections on 1 October.

The Secretary General also congratulated Mr. Ivanishvili and the Georgian Dream coalition for their success in the elections. In his message to both Mr. Ivanishvili and President Saakashvili, the Secretary General emphasized the importance for all sides to come together to continue reforms and further consolidate democracy and the rule of law. “This is a historic moment in the democratic development of your country ," the Secretary general said. "Now it is important for all sides to come together to further consolidate democracy and the rule of law.”  The Secretary General confirmed that NATO remained ready to further assist Georgia in  defence and security sector reforms and that the Alliance was looking forward to making the close partnership with Georgia even stronger.

The Secretary General expressed his condolences to President Saakashvili and the Georgian people for the recent death of a Georgian officer in Afghanistan and conveyed NATO's strong appreciation for Georgia's steadfast commitment to Afghanistan.
