NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed ways to improve the Alliance’s cooperation with the United Nations during talks on Thursday (27 September) with Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General.
Mr. Fogh Rasmussen pointed out that cooperation with the United Nations is a priority for NATO, which was reaffirmed by NATO Allied leaders at their Chicago Summit earlier this year.
Stressing that all current NATO operations are based on UN mandates, the Secretary General reviewed progress in Afghanistan, Kosovo and NATO's counter-piracy operation off the Horn of Africa.The two international organisations have also made good progress in cooperating in many practical areas, including training, civil-emergency cooperation, disaster relief, counter-terrorism and anti-corruption. Mr Ban Ki-moon took part in the last two NATO Summits in Lisbon and Chicago.
Following his meeting at the United Nations, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen met Fellows of the Colin L. Powell Centre for Leadership and Service and gave a speech at the City College of New York addressing the issue of why NATO matters. He also answered questions from faculty and students. Earlier in the day the Secretary General also attended a roundtable discussion hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations.
