NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen attended the opening of the UN General Assembly's ministerial session and took part in a series of meetings on the margins of the session.

At a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Mr Fogh Rasmussen thanked Ukraine for its contributions to NATO-led operations and missions, including in Afghanistan and Kosovo. The Secretary General made clear that NATO remains committed to assisting Ukraine with the implementation of reforms and further developing practical cooperation. He stressed that NATO leaders at the Chicago Summit encouraged Ukraine to address the existing shortcomings of the judicial system and to ensure full compliance with the rule of law.

Mr Fogh Rasmussen also discussed ways to deepen cooperation with Qatar at a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The Secretary General thanked Qatar for its crucial role in the successful NATO-led operation to protect the people of Libya last year. He made clear that NATO shares an interest in the stability and security of the region, and remains committed to strengthening the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative partnership. The Secretary General and the Emir of Qatar exchanged views on recent developments in the region.
