NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed German President Joachim Gauck on his first official visit to NATO headquarters on Monday, 16 April 2012.
The Secretary General praised Germany’s commitment to NATO and its role in the Alliance’s missions, notably in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
Mr. Fogh Rasmussen updated the German president on the two operations during their meeting. The two also discussed NATO’s upcoming Chicago summit, which will focus on Afghanistan and on NATO’s Smart Defence and capabilities package.
Germany has 4,900 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s ISAF mission. It is leading two Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Kunduz and Feyzabad in northern Afghanistan. Germany has also provided troops as part of a Quick Response Force and Combat Support Service which are based in Mazar e-Sharif.
Germany has also made an important contribution to NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR) mission. It currently has 1,243 troops participating in that mission, which is the largest contribution at present.
