Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met with Prime Minister Igor Lukšić of Montenegro on 21 March 2012 and discussed the growing cooperation between NATO and Montenegro and reform efforts in his country.
“Montenegro is an important partner for the Alliance and an important aspirant to NATO membership. I would like to congratulate the Prime Minister for his country’s commitment to reforms”, the Secretary General said. “These will be vital for future membership in NATO, especially political and defence reforms”.
The Secretary General also discussed with Prime Minister Lukšić issues of common interest, including developments in the Balkan region.
“We know and appreciate Montenegro’s active contribution to cooperation and security in the region”, the Secretary General added. “We look forward to continued practical cooperation with Montenegro in all areas that are important for regional security.”
During his visit, Prime Minister Luksic also addressed the North Atlantic Council and discussed with Allies preparations for the Alliance’s Chicago Summit in May. Allies thanked Prime Minister Lukšić for Montenegro’s contribution to NATO’s ISAF mission in Afghanistan and commended Montenegro's progress in implementing important reforms.
