The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev, visited NATO Headquarters on Wednesday, 15 February 2012. He met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and addressed the North Atlantic Council.

I am very glad to welcome President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan at NATO Headquarters”, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.  “NATO greatly values its partnership with Azerbaijan. We are grateful for Azerbaijan’s contribution in Afghanistan. We share many political priorities and security interests. And we have built up our cooperation and dialogue over many years. Our relationship contributes to regional and Euro-Atlantic security and we wish to take it forward in that way.

The Secretary General thanked President Aliyev for the offer to contribute to a trust fund in support of  the Afghan National Security Forces.

NATO Allies also discussed with President Aliyev how cooperation in the framework of NATO’s partnership with Azerbaijan can be further enhanced.  NATO and Azerbaijan agreed in December a new Individual Partnership Action Plan, that will provide the basis for practical cooperation in the next two years.
