Today, NATO’s Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, met with Bulgaria’s President, Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, on his first visit to NATO Headquarters since his entry into office on 19 January 2012.

At a joint press conference, the Secretary General praised Bulgaria’s valuable contribution across NATO’s agenda priorities. He commended in particular Bulgaria’s active participation in NATO’s operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo and in protecting the people of Libya, as well as its paramount role in strenghtening cooperation with partners from the Western Balkans. "Bulgaria is an important NATO Ally, an anchor of security in South-Eastern Europe", he said, "your commitment is important".

Mr. Rasmussen also welcomed Bulgaria’s commitment to making the Alliance smarter, leaner, and more effective: "Bulgaria is already helping to realise those ambitions. It takes part in our multinational programmes to provide heavy transport aircraft and ground surveillance capabilities. Those are good examples of nations cooperating and prioritising – what we call Smart Defence".

Ahead of the Chicago’s Summit, Mr. Rasmussen reaffirmed the importance for all Allies to stay committed to their shared security and values: "in less than four months’ time, we will have to shape an Alliance which is capable of overcoming the economic crisis of today, while still guaranteeing security for tomorrow", he said, "and Bulgaria can further play a role in it".
