Members of the Afghan Armed Forces took part in the "Defence Leadership in Building Integrity" course held from 12 to 14 December at the National Military Afghan Academy in Kabul, Afghanistan.

This training is very interesting because it touches on one of the most critical problems of this country which is corruption. The training is live and the issues are relevant,” says Colonel Ghulam Hazrat, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Air Force, Afghanistan National Army.

The 33 participants examined corruption risks within the MOD in areas such as logistics, intelligence, finances, procurement. They focused on promoting best practices and strengthening transparency and accountability in the security forces. Lectures and practical exercises helped students assess the risk of corruption and its impact on society and armed forces. They also looked at practical measures to reduce the risk of corruption and improve delivery of services to the people and discussed the role of the Afghan media and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in raising awareness and reducing the risks of corruption.

I have learned that corruption and a fight against corruption starts from each individual. I am going to work with my personnel on integrity and countering corruption. I will encourage an individual attitude that lowers corruption and will ensure my team works with integrity and honesty,” says Colonel Mohammad Musa, Sector of Complaints, Inspector General Office of Office of General Staff, Ministry of Defence.

Previously taught by a team of international experts, this was the first time the course was delivered by an Afghan training team.

Certificates were awarded by General Payenda, Inspector General, Ministry of Defence of Afghanistan.

NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised the “Defence Leadership in Building Integrity” course in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as part of the Enduring Partnership.
