In collaboration with NATO, Turkey has been actively tackling issues facing the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea for many years. It has undertaken multiple studies and projects within the framework of the NATO Science Programme to help preserve these water resources. From fish stock assessment to ecosystem modelling and wave climatology for the Turkish coast, the fields examined are varied and numerous.
One study, for example, involving all the other surrounding countries, resulted in the development of an integrated coastal zone management programme for the Black Sea. Another study addressed the environment security of transporting oil and gas through the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, with Turkey working in collaboration with Georgia.
Others have focused on planning for the future environmental health of the Caspian Sea and the sustainable management of coastal lagoons. Another is currently focusing, more generally, on security and cross-border cooperation in the EU, Black Sea Region and Southern Caucasus.
All of these projects have and are helping to sustain these water resources in the long-term, while strengthening regional ties between scientists.
