The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis met with the North Atlantic Council on 23 November 2011 to brief NATO Allies on the forthcoming OSCE Ministerial Council on 6-7 December in Vilnius.
He addressed issues of interest both for the OSCE and NATO, including support for strengthening the rule of law, the respect for human rights and the development of democratic institutions in the Balkans, in Eastern Europe, in Central Asia and in Afghanistan. The OSCE Chairman-in-Office discussed with NATO Allies the priorities of the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship and prospects for further cooperation between the two organisations, including support for the Mediterranean countries.
“Under the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship we have witnessed an expanded dialogue between NATO and the OSCE”, NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisognero said. “Today’s exchange underscores the importance of the role played by the OSCE and that the organisation is a valuable partner for NATO”.
NATO and the OSCE are keeping a regular dialogue on regional security and are also working on issues ranging from arms control, non-proliferation of small arms and light weapons, destruction of stocks of ammunition to counter-terrorism and cyber security.
