The Hague – Adm. Giampaolo Di Paola, Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee (CMC), paid an official visit to the Netherlands today. Hosted by General Peter van Uhm, Chief of the Dutch Armed Forces, Adm. Di Paola had the opportunity to meet with H.E. Mr. Hans Hillen, Minister of Defence and with Mr. Karel van Oosterom, Director General of the Policy Affairs Branch of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Throughout the visit, discussions focused on NATO's ongoing operations, and in particular on the Dutch contribution to NATO's Training Mission in Afghanistan and the end of Operation Unified Protector. CMC commended the Dutch Armed Forces for their contribution to the reinforcement of the No Fly Zone and the Arms Embargo aspects of the operation, and for their enduring commitment to NATO’s operation in Afghanistan.

Beside operations, attention was also posed on how to address future financial challenges through the implementation of NATO’s Smart Defence Concept, in which Dutch armed forces have been engaged for many years along with other NATO countries, as the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium.

Concluding his visit, CMC was invited by Dr. Jouke de Vries, Dean of the Leiden Faculty Campus, to give a lecture on “NATO Operations and Transformational Challenges” at the University of Leiden, faculty of International Affairs. Introduced by Dr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (former NATO Secretary General), CMC explained NATO’s current role in an increasingly complex global security environment:

“NATO is going through an extraordinary time. It has never been involved in so many military operations in the past as now and it has never been under such heavy political and financial pressure to undertake its transformation. One of the key points is that NATO is not and should not become the policeman of the world. The Strategic Concept, adopted by the Heads of State and Government at the Lisbon Summit in 2010, is very clear on that point. NATO is not a global security organisation but its concerns are global.”
