Генеральный секретарь НАТО Андерс Фог Расмуссен и председатель Комиссии Африканского союза Жан Пинг встретились 31 мая 2011 г., чтобы продолжить обсуждение кризиса в Ливии.

Во время встречи генеральный секретарь ясно дал понять, что операция НАТО «Юнифайд протектор» проводится в полном соответствии с положениями резолюций 1970 и 1973 Совета Безопасности ООН для защиты гражданского населения от нападений и угрозы нападений. Кроме этого г-н Расмуссен подчеркнул важность продолжения диалога с Африканским союзом, а также со всеми ключевыми международными и региональными действующими лицами в рамках усилий международного сообщества по достижению политического решения текущего кризиса. Г-н Расмуссен отметил очень хорошее практическое сотрудничество с Африканским союзом и подчеркнул, что НАТО сохраняет приверженность этим отношениям.

Г-н Пинг уже посещал штаб-квартиру 5 апреля, когда встречался с Североатлантическим советом.
