The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, visited Herat, in western Afghanistan, as part of his on-going visit to Afghanistan.

The Secretary General arrived in Kabul on 23 May.  He met with NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Simon Gass, the Commander of ISAF forces General David Petraeus, the United Nation Secretary General’s Special Representative Stefan di Mistura, and the European Union Special Representative Vygaudas Ušackas.

He also met with President Karzai and held a joint press conference before flying to Herat on 24 May, accompanied by Ambassador Gass.

There he received an operational update by the Commander of the Regional Command West, Brigadier General Carmine Masiello.

After meeting with Herat Governor, Dr. Mohammed Daoud Saba, the Secretary General joined him for a walk through a market leading to the famed Citadel. He noted, “Herat has a great cultural history, as this place demonstrates, but also serves as a modern, vibrant economic center for the West of the country. As one of the areas in which Transition will begin soon, I see here significant signs of progress.”
