Kyiv, Ukraine, 13 May 2011 - Lieutenant General Juergen Bornemann, Director General International Military Staff (DG IMS), concluded today a three-day visit to Ukraine’s capital at the invitation of Colonel General Hryhoriy Pedchenko, Chief of the General Staff and Chief in Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
During the visit, LtGen Bornemann and the political-military delegation from NATO HQ had the opportunity to meet with Hryhoviy Pedchenko, Ukrainian Chief of Defence and with Ukrainian General Staff key leaders. He also met with Mr. Pavlo Klimkin, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and representatives of the National Security and Defence Council, Mr. Volodymyr Mozharovskyi, First Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr. Volodymyr Omelianchuk, Deputy Minister of Defence and Mr. Anatoliy Gritsenko, Head of the Defence and Security Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament. Finally, the NATO's Liaison Office in Kyiv updated DGIMS on latest activities and developments.
This visit reinforced NATO’s positive and mutually beneficial cooperation with Ukraine, which is underscored by Ukraine’s Annual National Programme and the "Military Committe with Ukraine" Work Plan for 2011-2012. During the discussions, Ukraine's active role in the Euro-Atlantic area was underlined, including contributions to NATO's operations and to the NATO Response Force and the ongoing reform of Ukraine's defence sector, which will not only enable a better response to emerging security challenges such as cyber attacks and terrorism, but will also improve interoperability with NATO.
The visit coincided with the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Workshop, a NATO-sponsored event at the National Defense University of Ukraine, where LtGen Bornemann delivered a keynote address. The DGIMS was also invited to deliver a lecture to students of the Kyiv National University named after Taras Shevchenko. During the CBRN Workshop, LtGen Bornemann recalled that “Ukraine was the first partner nation to participate in the NATO Response Force and, thereby, set a strong precedence for a contribution to Euro-Atlantic security […], serving Ukraine’s efforts of improving its own capabilities, its cooperation with international partners, as well as its benefit to NATO and other partner."
