On the third day of his US trip, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen Monday gave speeches to the World Affairs Council of Atlanta and to the Georgia National Guards at Dobbins Air Force Base.

Talking about the substantial contribution from United States, he stressed, that Americans, Canadians and Europeans are in this together. "No one nation, no one organisation, can do it alone.  Even a superpower like America can’t do it alone -- and we certainly can’t do it without America. Solidarity between the NATO Allies has been, and will remain, vital to our continued success", he said.

"Europe came to America’s aid within hours of the 9/11 attacks.  And the Alliance invoked the collective defence clause in the founding treaty for the first time in NATO’s history." "We made clear that an attack on the United States was an attack on all Allies. That commitment is not just words.  It is a reality every day.  In Afghanistan, for example, 40,000 Allied and partner troops are working shoulder-to-shoulder with American forces."

Mr.  Rasmussen also said about the Taliban attack Saturday: "It was planned as a spectacular attack but it turned out to be a spectacular failure. Not least because of the contribution of the Afghan security forces. This gives hope and makes it realistic that we can complete transition to Afghan security lead by 2014."

Tuesday the trip continues in Austin, Texas, visiting the Texas National Guard and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library.
