Naples – After reviewing records of missions conducted over Libya last evening, NATO confirms there were no airstrikes in the area of the university area of Tripoli during the time alleged by the Gaddaffi Regime, following allegations and media reports that NATO had hit a target in Tripoli.
“We have aircraft flying missions over Libya at all times,”, “we will continue to strike at regime forces however necessary and wherever we see them presenting a threat to the civilian population, and unlike Gaddafi’s forces, we take extreme care to ensure the safety of the civilian population.”
Late Thursday, 14 April, journalists were taken to view the site of an alleged NATO air strike at a university in Tripoli. Gaddafi Regime officials claim that a number of students at the university café were injured, and that buildings were damaged by a blast when NATO aircraft struck an ’old army barracks’ 400 meters away.
“Over the past 24 hours there has been a series of disturbing reports of attacks by pro-Gaddafi forces in the city of Misratah. These reports and images are very disturbing,” said Lieutenant –General Charles Bouchard, Commander of Operation Unified Protector.
“Even more disturbing are Gaddafi regime comments that he intends to meet humanitarian relief efforts with violence,” Lieutenant-General Bouchard said, adding “he and his troops must stop these acts.”
NATO Operation Unified Protector is mandated under the UN Security Council Resolution 1973 to protect civilians from attack using any means necessary.
