Washington D.C. – On 10 April 2011, Admiral di Paola, Chairman of the Military Committee (CMC), participated in the 2011 plenary meeting of “The Trilateral Commission” in Washington D.C. The Trilateral Commission was originally created in 1973 to bring together experienced leaders, belonging to three continents – Europe, North America and Asia- to discuss issues of global concern and foster communication and cooperation among them.

The CMC attended the session chaired by Henry Kissinger, dedicated to the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, during which he delivered a message on the Afghan realities and NATO strategy to help the Afghan people to take ownweship of their future. He spoke about the way ahead for Afghanistan and about the ongoing process for the gradual shift of responsibility from ISAF to Afghan security forces.

Following this session the CMC attended a debate dedicated to the Arab Spring in the Middle East chaired by Mr. Jusuf Wanandi, Pacific Asian Deputy Chairman of the Trilateral Commission. On this occasion, the Chairman of the Military Committee was invited to share his views on the situation in Libya and NATO action in the framework of Operation Unified Protector.
