On 21 February, a delegation from the Afghan Council United Kingdom (UK) visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

The group, which included more than 20 Afghan students, had discussions on NATO's priorities following the Lisbon Summit, including the long-term commitment of the Alliance to lasting security in Afghanistan. The students also held an exchange of views with students from different faculties of Kabul University via video conference and met with representatives from the Embassy of Afghanistan in Belgium and the United Kingdom Delegation to NATO.

During an interview with NATOchannel.tv, the Director of the Afghan Council UK, Mr Fakir Mayvand, said that a key part of the visit was to link the Afghan Diaspora with Afghans living, studying, and working in Afghanistan. He emphasised the need to involve the young Afghan generation in the future of Afghanistan.  “I believe we are going in the right direction”, he said.  Mr Mayvand concluded the interview with an address to the audience in Dari where he underlined the important role that young Afghan people can play in the future development of their country.

The Afghan Council UK is a voluntary organisation providing advice to the Afghan community and refugees of other ethnic origins living in the United Kingdom.

NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division organised the visit as part of its outreach programme towards Afghanistan.
