On 24 and 25 January, experts gathered in Warsaw, Poland at a NATO–Ukraine workshop on the protection of high visibility events (HVE) against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.
During the workshop, allies and partners looked at ways to support the Polish and Ukrainian authorities as they prepare for the UEFA European Football Championship, “EURO 2012”. The two countries will jointly host the tournament from 8th June to 1st July 2012.
Participants discussed the host nations’ requirements for requesting and receiving NATO’s assistance during the event, drawing on past experience gained from NATO’s support to previous high visibility events and focussing on the pre-deployment of NATO’s Multinational CBRN Defence Battalion
Ambassaor Jacek Bylica, Head of NATO’S Weapons of Mass Destruction Centre, said, “NATO stands ready to facilitate specialised assistance to Ukraine for the security of EURO 2012. While providing security to big sporting events will always rest on the shoulders of the host country, some niche capabilities, like counter-terrorist assessments or CBRN protection, could be provided by NATO and NATO Allies upon request.”
The workshop successfully demonstrated the ongoing implementation of “NATO’s Comprehensive Policy for Preventing the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and defending against CBRN Threats” by enhancing civil-military cooperation in CBRN Defence and improving outreach to partners and international organisations.
More than 70 civilian and military participants from 16 nations attended the workshop, including representatives from international organisations such as the European Commission, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence (JCBRND CoE).
The Republic of Poland hosted the workshop with the support of NATO’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Non-Proliferation Centre (WMDC). NATO’s Committee on Proliferation (CP) and the Civil Emergency Planning Committee organized the event.
A NATO–Ukraine Advanced Research Workshop on the Enhancement of CBRN Defence Capabilities will take place at the National Defence University of Ukraine in Kiev from 10 to 12 May 2011.
