Baghdad, IRAQ – NATO’s training Mission in Iraq (NTM-I) has graduated the first set of Iraqi Oil Police trainers from its new course located Base Camp Dublin outside of Baghdad, on 3rd February, fulfilling a request from the Iraqi Government for specialized training of its security forces.

Iraq had requested assistance from NATO with training for its Oil Police, to help them develop a cadre of professionals to protect critical economic infrastructure. The first Oil Police instructor course started in October 2010.

In all, 21 students graduated this NATO “Train the Trainers Course”, including five officers and 16 non-commissioned officers, who will eventually play an important role as trainers of future Iraqi Oil Police.  This highly specialized training was conducted by the Italian Carabinieri of the NTM-I’s Gendarmerie Training Unit.

The graduation ceremony was attended by the Commander of the Iraqi Federal Police, General Hussain and the Commander and Deputy Commander of the Oil Police, Major-General Hamid and Brigadier-General Salah.  Hosting the event was the NTM-I Deputy Commander, Major-Genral Claudio Angelelli and the Gendarmerie Training Division Commander, Colonel Fausto Vignola.

During the ceremony, the Oil Police Commander, Major-General Hamid, expressed his appreciation on the valid work done by the Italian Carabinieri, and asked the NATO Commanders to double the number of Iraqi students for future courses.

NATO’s commitment to train Iraqi security forces continues with several specialized courses ongoing.  Today’s graduation will be repeated in the coming weeks as the Italian Carabinieri trainers are already involved in the second Oil Police training course at Base Camp Dublin.
