On 27 January, the NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, met with the Alliance Military Chiefs of Defence. They had an open, informal exchange of views on the most pressing priorities facing NATO, including the implementation of the new Strategic Concept, the way ahead in Afghanistan and maritime security issues. The meeting was opened by NATO’s most senior military official, Admiral Giampaolo di Paola, the Chairman of the Military Committee.

During his remarks to the Generals and Admirals, Rasmussen noted “we are making progress in Afghanistan, even in some of the most difficult areas – great efforts we have made on various initiatives are paying off and I expect 2011 to be decisive.”

The Secretary General welcomed the work done by the Military Committee this week towards the implementation of the new Strategic Concept. He emphasised that “the new Strategic Concept rebalances our core tasks, highlighting collective defence, crisis management and cooperative security.”

The Military Committee meets in its highest format at the NATO Chiefs of Defences level three times a year. The meetings taking place this week are the first of those three meetings for 2011.
