NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited London for discussions with British Prime Minister David Cameron and members of the National Security Council ahead of the NATO Summit in Lisbon. They exchanged views on NATO's new Strategic Concept and NATO reform. In addition, they reviewed progress in Afghanistan and looked forward to an announcement in Lisbon on the start of transition to Afghan lead for security early in 2011.

The consultations with Prime Minister Cameron were very constructive in finalising the preparations for the NATO Summit. The Secretary General expressed satisfaction that the Summit will be a visible demonstration of a modernized and strengthened Alliance, ready to take on new challenges in the years to come:

"We are investing in new capabilities such as cyber and missile defence. We are enhancing our partnerships and promoting a more efficient use of resources, including within our own NATO structures.

In short, we are preparing NATO to be fit for purpose for the 21st century," he said.

The Secretary General also thanked the Prime Minister for the United Kingdom’s continuing commitment to NATO operations, especially in Afghanistan.
