In the run-up to the Alliance’s Lisbon Summit in November of this year, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division is prioritizing communications efforts with key Portuguese audiences. In this context, and with a view to the upcoming anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, on 18 October a group from the Portuguese Association of Women Scientists (AMONET) were welcomed at NATO Headquarters.

Acting Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, Dr Stefanie Babst briefed the group on NATO’s New Strategic Concept. Additional briefings covered NATO’s operations in Afghanistan, relations with Russia, the Alliance’s scientific agenda as well as its policies on gender diversity.

According to Ana Maria Lobo, Vice President of AMONET, the briefings “were very interesting and illustrated well the long history of cooperation between NATO and the scientific field.” Another member of the delegation opined “It seems the New Strategic Concept will fully translate the new security environment, specifically new challenges touching upon the field of sciences such as energy security and cyber-security.”

In 2010, NATO PDD has also welcomed visiting groups from the Association of Women Jurists and the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights.
