From 27 to 30 September, more than 800 information assurance (IA) experts and officials from the 28 NATO nations and its agencies met with leading companies from the field at the 2010 NATO Information Assurance Symposium (NIAS).
The event entitled “Solving the challenges of delivering information assurance in a federated world” looked at the particular challenges NATO faces as a coalition relying on federated IA services to provide a secure environment for its operations. Cryptography, identity management and cyber defence were among the topics covered.
“Our job (…) is to prevent the loss of information, the destruction of it”,said Admiral James G. Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe. “You must assure that the information (…) is secure, that it’s accurate, that it’s protected. And you must do it in a world in which there is enormous volume, tremendous geopolitical complication, and very real consequences.”
Other keynote speakers included Lieutenant General Kurt Herrmann, Director of the NATO Communications and Information Systems Services Agency (NCSA), and Major General Glynne Hines, Director of the NATO Headquarters Consultation, Command and Control Staff (NHQC3S).
The First NATO Signal Battalion provided static displays at the event alongside commercial vendors showcasing the latest IA products. Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) hosted the event in Mons, Belgium.
