On 7 September, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met with US President Barack Obama, together with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and National Security Advisor James Jones. They looked forward to the upcoming NATO Summit in November, and discussed the importance of agreeing a new Strategic Concept for the Alliance that mandates NATO to defend its members in new ways against the threats of today and tomorrow.

They discussed the way forward in Afghanistan, agreeing that progress is being made on the ground, and that there is now a clear roadmap for a conditions-based transition to Afghan lead, beginning next year. They also shared the strong view, however, that the ticket to transition is trainers, and that all Allies should be working hard to ensure that the NATO training mission in Afghanistan is fully resourced.
