On July 21st, the Secretary General visited Islamabad, to meet with the Pakistani leadership. He held talks with President Zardari, Prime Minister Gilani and Foreign Minister Qireshi, as well as the senior military leadership.

The Secretary General agreed with all his interlocutors that NATO and Pakistan shared a strategic interest in the stabilisation of Afghanistan, for the benefit of the entire region.

He also proposed to work towards an enhanced political relationship between NATO and Pakistan, which the Pakistani authorities welcomed.

Finally, they agreed on the need to step up practical military cooperation, both with regard to security in the border region between Afghanistan, and between NATO and Pakistan more generally.
