The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, visited Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, and the city of Jalalabad, in the East of the country, before attending the International Conference on Afghanistan which will take place in Kabul on 20 July.

The Secretary General first arrived in Kabul and met with NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Mark Sedwill. They addressed Afghan security, governance and development in the run up to the Kabul Conference.

On 19 July, he visited the Kandahar Air Field with with Ambassador Sedwill and the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), General David Petraeus, where he received regional update by the Commander of the Regional Command South, Major General Carter. In Kandahar city, he also visited an Afghan National Police (ANP) checkpoint, as well as an ANP training Centre.

Mr. Fogh Rasmussen then flew to Jalalabad in Nangahar Province, where he was shown some visible examples of progress, including a market and an orchard.
