With the support of NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division (Science for Peace and Security Programme), the NATO Centre of Excellence on Defence against Terrorism assigned a Mobile Education Team to conduct the Advanced Training Course “Defence Against Terrorism: Different Dimensions and Trends of Emerging Threat; Terrorism” in Kabul, Afghanistan, from 23 to 27 May 2010.

The expert’s team consisted of nine terrorism experts and academics from Slovenia (Dr. Domika Svarc), Singapore (Ms. Susan Sim), Turkey (Col. Uğur Ersen, Col. Oğuz Kulpçu, Col. Özden Çelik, Lt.Col. Uğur Güngör Ph.D, Maj. Abdullah Aykut Öncü) and the United States (Dr. Richard Ward, Dr.Robyn R. Mace). Thirty-two high ranking military officers and eight civilians from Afghan ministries participated in the training course.

At the event’s opening, the Afghan National Army’s Chief of Operations, Ltg. Shir Mohammed Karimi, delivered a speech in which he underlined the threat of terrorism and ways to tackle it. He also delivered certificates and plaques to the participants at the closing ceremony.

During the five-day course, 17 lectures were given. Participants were divided into two working groups to discuss the topic and presented their findings on the last day of the course. A panel discussion also took place on 27 May.

All efforts were made to provide a frank and candid environment where all points of view could be expressed in a friendly atmosphere.

In December 2010, a book consisting of the course’s lectures will be publishedwith the title “Defence Against Terrorism: Different Dimensions and Trends of Emerging Threat; Terrorism”.
