The President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite, paid a working visit to NATO Headquarters on 28 April 2010 to discuss NATO’s activities, operations and future.

Following a bilateral meeting with the Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Lithuanian leader addressed the North Atlantic Council. The key topics that emerged were Afghanistan, progress on the Alliance’s new Strategic Concept, NATO’s relations with Russia, energy security and concrete ways of demonstrating Allied commitment to collective defence.

The Secretary General thanked President Grybauskaite for her visit, the second during her term in office, describing it as “another testimony of the strong Lithuanian commitment” to NATO and praised the “significant Lithuanian contribution to our mission in Afghanistan”.

The President described 2010 as “the most important year” for NATO in view of the upcoming summit and expected adoption of the new Strategic Concept. She also stressed her country’s support for developing cooperative relations between NATO and the Russian Federation, “based on realism and constructive dialogue, and reciprocity”.
