Aivis Ronis, the Latvian member of the Group of Experts on NATO’s new Strategic Concept, traveled to Reykjavik, Iceland, to engage in talks on the new Strategic Concept on 12 April 2010.

During his visit to the Icelandic capital, Mr Ronis first met with several high-level officials from the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the overall process of the new Strategic Concept, which – once agreed by Allies – will guide the organization’s future direction.

In the afternoon, Mr Ronis participated in a round table discussion, hosted by the Icelandic Institute of International Affairs and the Association for Western Cooperation, alongside members from the academic community, journalists and NGOs.

The discussions stressed the importance of the new threats and challenges that face the Alliance as well as NATO’s role in the High North, its mission in Afghanistan and the extent to which it has implemented United Nations Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in its missions.

On the following day, Mr Ronis met with the Icelandic Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee for a second round of discussions on the new Strategic Concept.

The Expert Group, chaired by Dr Madeleine Albright, is expected to present their recommendations to NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen beginning May 2010.
