On the occasion of the NATO Defence Ministers Meeting held in Istanbul on 4 and 5 February 2010, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division organized the "Istanbul Youth Forum: Bridge for Peace" with the Turkish Euro-Atlantic Youth Committee (YATA-TURK), an NGO created in 2005 to engage Turkish youngsters in international security issues.

The forum took place at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) from 3 to 5 February, bringing together 150 young people from Turkey’s main universities as well as 18 professionals in information technologies from various regions in Afghanistan.

For two days, the participants discussed NATO’s future roles and missions at a time when the Alliance is preparing a new Strategic Concept to adapt itself to the threats and challenges of the 21st century. On the last day of the forum, they issued a communiqué to the Group of Experts on NATO’s new Strategic Concept calling on the Alliance to increase attention to education and public diplomacy efforts, among other issues.

One of the event’s highlights was the meeting with Hikmet Çetin, Former Turkish Foreign Minister and former NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, and Ambassador Ümit Pamir, Member of the Group of Experts on NATO’s new Strategic Concept.

Mr Çetin called on the international community not to abandon Afghanistan and underscored the importance of Afghan ownership in all initiatives. He said important steps had already been achieved, especially in the field of elections, women’s rights and provincial reconstruction teams.

He urged NATO and all other parties involved to strengthen civilian efforts in Afghanistan and to pay special attention to Afghan youth and women, underlining that education and employment should be high priorities on their agenda. His views were widely shared by Turkish and Afghan participants.

The event was opened by Jean-François Bureau, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy; Oğuz Yusuf Yiğit, Acting President of YATA-TURK; and Giuseppe Belardetti, President of the International Youth Atlantic Treaty Association (YATA).
