On 10 February, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, Iurie Leanca, met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and addressed the North Atlantic Council.

Minister Leanca was accompanied by Minister of Defence Vitalie Marinuta. During the meeting, Allies discussed the Republic of Moldova’s progress in the framework of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), to which the Republic of Moldova subscribed in 2006, and exchanged views about regional security. Allies reiterated that they stand ready to assist the Republic of Moldova in reaching its reform ambitions.

Allies commended the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Transnistria issue and its pragmatic attempts to put new ideas on the table. They also reaffirmed the Alliance’s position that Russia needs to fulfill the remaining Istanbul commitments.

In the margins of the meeting today, Defence Minister Marinuta also participated in a ceremony marking the launch of the third phase of a NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund project for the destruction of pesticides and dangerous chemicals. NATO’s Acting Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, Robert F. Simmons Jr., presided over the ceremony.
