Albania, one of NATO’s newest members, chaired the South East Europe Security Cooperation Steering Group (SEEGROUP) in 2009, becoming the first Allied nation to do so. The Chair has recently published its year-end report outlining the key areas of emphasis and activities that have guided the group over the last year.

The Chair’s report writes that the year was “a good mix of high level visitors from the regional countries and international organizations based in the South East Europe, interesting subjects of regional relevance and concrete cooperation projects”.

NATO's South East Europe Initiative is a series of programmes and activities aimed at promoting regional cooperation and long-term stability in the Balkans. It is an informal and open-ended group, set up in 2000 as part of the South East European Initiative.

Albania along with Croatia joined NATO at the Strasbourg-Kehl Summit in April this year, becoming the Alliance’s two newest members.
