The Secretary General paid his first official visit to London since taking office. In his meeting with Prime Minister Brown, the main topic of discussion was Afghanistan. They agreed that the way forward for the mission must be to accelerate transition to Afghan lead, and they shared the view that this could begin next year, where conditions allow, and in a NATO framework.

The Secretary General also met with Foreign Secretary Milliband, where again Afghanistan was the main topic. They looked ahead to the Foreign Ministers meeting in early December as an important opportunity for consultation at the political level on the mission, and agreed that clear, concrete progress in fighting corruption and improving governance is necessary from Afghan authorities.
