On Monday, 9 November, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen attended a ceremony in front of the Brandenburg Gate Berlin to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago.

“Germany has always viewed the Atlantic Alliance as an agent of positive change,” said the Secretary General. “Today, twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, as we set out to develop a new Strategic Concept, Germany, together with its Allies, is called upon to open a new chapter in the history of NATO.”

On 9 November 1989, East Berliners began crossing freely through a number of check points along the Berlin Wall. Crowds on both sides cheered as more border points were opened, reinstating roads that had been closed between East and West Berlin for decades.
