A week-long programme of events aimed at raising public awareness of NATO policies and structures and reaching out to the civil society was held throughout Georgia from 5 -10 October.

The programme – organized by the Georgian Information Center on NATO with the support of the Alliance’s Public Diplomacy Division -  included a video conference on the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan, a book launch on Georgia’s contribution to peacekeeping operations, the inauguration of a NATO square, a music concert and a series of public events in the country’s main cities.

Robert Simmons, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, took part in the event and met with representatives of opposition parties, ethnic minorities and students.

"NATO week is a very important event in the NATO-Georgia calendar each year.  It provides an excellent opportunity for the Georgian people to learn more about NATO-Georgia relations and the new policy initiatives at NATO.  Just as importantly, the week provides an opportunity for the members of Georgian society to engage in a dialogue about what their aspiration to NATO membership means, and what reforms are necessary to achieve this goal", he said.
