17 September saw the completion of a NATO Networking Infrastructure Grant in Ternopil, Ukraine, which helped set up and improve the Internet connectivity of four major research and educational institutes in the region. The Science for Peace and Security Programme funded this grant with a budget of 129 000 euros.

There is a strong academic and research base in the region, which hosts the Ternopil National Economic University, President Yuschenko's alma mater; a medical university, a polytechnics and a humanitarian institute. At the beginning of each school year, the city of Ternopil sees its population increase with some 40 000 to 50 000 new students.

Thanks to this grant, the four key institutes were able to purchase equipment such as “super” computers, modems and fibre-optic cables to hook up to the Internet, enabling their staff and students to develop and maintain contacts with the academic and scientific community. NATO consultants provided professional advice and helped implement the project.

In addition to promoting local and international collaboration among universities and research institutes, the project also made an important contribution to raising general public awareness of NATO in the region:

“Today, we are living proof of the level of cooperation that can be achieved between Ukraine and NATO in the area of science and this is something that our university is very proud of.  This project has not only helped us as an educational institution but all of Ukraine", said Professor Yuriy, Rector of the Ternopil National Economic University.
