The Secretary General met in Paris with President Sarkozy, Prime Minister Fillon, Foreign Minister Kouchner and Defence Minister Morin. Afghanistan was a principal topic of discussion; the Secretary General welcomed France's strong engagement in the mission, and agreed with President Sarkozy on the need to accelerate Afghan ownership.

They also discussed the importance of building stronger relations with Russia, steps to improve NATO-EU relations, and the future reform of the Alliance, in which France will play an important role. At the conclusion of his visit, the Secretary General also met with M. Gerard Larcher, President of the French Senate.
