The NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Ankara and met with President Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu, Minister of Defence Mehmet Vedci Gönül and the Chief of General Staff, General Ilker Basbug.

During the visit, the Secretary General thanked Turkey for its contributions to NATO operations and expressed hope that Turkey steps up its engagement in Afghanistan, both politically and militarily. He also said he hopes to see an improvement in relations between NATO and the European Union.

The Secretary General also attended a dinner marking the breaking of the day's fast (Iftar), hosted by Prime Minister Erdogan. “Turkey has always been, throughout its history, at the crossroads of civilisations and religions. My presence at this dinner, as a Dane, and the participation tonight of representatives of many countries and communities, shows that this long tradition of bringing cultures and civilisations together remains alive and strong,” the Secretary General said.
