On 28 July, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, came to NATO Headquarters immediately following a trip to Afghanistan.

He met first with NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Claudio Bisogniero, and then with the NATO Ambassadors, to discuss ongoing operations in Afghanistan and overall efforts to build security and stability in the region.

He stressed the importance of contributing to the holding of credible elections in Afghanistan on 20 August, and of continuing to support the development of the Afghan Army and Police.

He also gave his assessment of the security situation in Pakistan, which is directly linked to security in Afghanistan.
