On his farewell visit to the United Kingdom, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met in London with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, as well as with Foreign Secretary David Milliband and Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth.

They discussed the situation in Afghanistan, including the ongoing review being conducted by the Commander of ISAF (COMISAF).

They also discussed reform of the Alliance, which will be carried forward under incoming Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, including in the context of the Strategic Concept.

The Secretary General  then gave a speech at Chatham House on present operations and the future of the Alliance.
