On Monday, 8 June, the Secretary General paid his farewell visit to Turkey. In Ankara, he met with President Gül, Prime Minister Erdogan, Foreign Minister Davatoglu and Defence Minister Gönül, as well as the Chief of Defence.

Their discussion focused on Afghanistan, where Turkey committed to step up its civilian and military activities in the country. The Secretary General thanked Turkey for the constructive role it is playing, including in supporting political dialogue in the region.

They discussed extensively the new Strategic Concept, in which Turkey intends to play an active role in shaping the future of the Alliance. They also stressed the importance of building strong relations between NATO and its partners in the international community, as well as the value of the NATO mission in Kosovo, in which Turkey continues to play an important role.
